Effects of Varied Nutrient Substrate on Weight Loss and Satiety

Presented by Susan Raatz PhD, RD, University of Minnesota

Reviewed by Elise Pangborn RD, LDN, CDE

A long-term dietary intervention trial is currently under way at the University of Minnesota. The specific aims of the study are:

  1. To evaluate weight loss in subjects receiving three dietary regimens - High Glycemic Index (reference diet), Low Glycemic Index and High Fat.
  2. To determine the perceived satiety of each diet and assess dietary adherence.
  3. To evaluate parameters of weight change (body wt., body composition, metabolic rate)
  4. To evaluate metabolic parameters (insulin sensitivity, lipids, blood pressure).

Protocol Description:

*The glycemic load of a food is calculated by multiplying the glycemic index times the carbohydrate content of food divided by 50g. (GI x CHO content of food / 50 g)

Results: Only a few participants had reached day 84 at the time of her presentation. Although Susan did have some preliminary data we look forward to the completion and conclusions of her study.
